Am I caring for my betta fish properly?

I’ve had my betta fish for two months now (I got him on March 3 of this year) and I was just wondering if I’m caring for him the way I should be - he’s my first betta, so I’m sort of new to this!
I keep him in a one-liter bowl, about a foot from a lamp (which is usually on for a few hours a day), with about an inch of store-bought aquarium gravel at the bottom. There is also a store-bought plastic plant in there, which he loves to hide in!
I feed him twice a day: four pellets in the morning (around 6:45am on weekdays, around 10am on weekends) and two pellets plus some freeze-dried bloodworms at night (around 8pm).
I do a full water change once a week, with water treated with store-bought water conditioner: I add sixteen drops of the conditioner to a liter of tap water, let it sit next to his bowl for a few hours, move him to a smaller container, take out and clean the plant, dump out the rest of the bowlwater, rinse out the gravel, put it back in, put the plant back in, put the treated water in, then finally put him back in.

Is this a good way to take care of my betta fish? My mom thinks I’m overfeeding him, but he ravenously eats all the pellets within a minute of me dropping them into his bowl, so it seems like he’s actually quite hungry; does this mean I’m not feeding him enough? Any tips or advice is greatly appreciated!

What should I do if my Betta fish picks on other fish?

I recently added my Betta fish (Betta splendens) to a community tank with five other fish. Two head and tail light tetra (Hemigrammus ocellifer), two neon tetra (Paracheirodon innesi), and some type of algae-eating catfish (we got him from a friend, so we don’t know what kind he is).

Normally Betta fish should be kept in a solitary tank, however they really only tend to attack other Bettas or fish with bright colours, or long fins. So I recently moved him to my 10-gallon community tank, because I previously kept in a glass ‘goldfish’ bow, but it was difficult to keep the water levels balanced, rather cold, and he started to show signs of Fin Rot.

When I first moved him into the tank, he was shy and somewhat skiddish. We called him a big baby because he would freak out and hide whenever someone would go near his bowl, so I wasn’t surprised that he stayed away from the other fish. However the next day, when I got home from school, I saw that one of the Head and Tail Light Tetras had a bit missing from his upper caudal fin, and my Betta was viciously chasing them around the tank, nipping at them whenever they got too close.

I know they are not ideal tank mates, however I had hoped that they would just ignore each other. Yet for the next two days since then, the Tetras are wary of the Betta, yet he hasn’t attacked them anymore.
But I’m afraid it might happen again. Is there anything I can do that will prevent this?
…wow sorry for all those typos.
EDIT :: Just an update - I decided to keep him with the others, and he hasn’t attacked them since that once time. I think he was trying to just exert his authority, so now they ignore each other, although the Head and Tail Light fish are wary of the Betta still. But they give each other space, and so I think I will keep them together until there is another physical attack.

Betta about 1 year old. Change water every 1-2 weeks. Bowl has rocks on bottom & peace lily clippings in water. No bad odor but water seems too cloudy. Just changed it Friday. Use tap water conditioner for every change. Very thorough with cleaning. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Don’t want to lose the little guy.

What fish are compatable with betas?

Serious and informative answers only please!

I KNOW male betas can be put with other fish that do not look like betas but I’m not sure which types are least likely to attract the male beta wrath. I thought about getting several female betas (the more there are, the less likely they will fight…) but decided I didn’t feel like taking the risk involved (I couldn’t handle watching them fight to the death if they didn’t get along).

I live in a dorm room kept usually between 73-75 degrees so I do not have a heater in my 10 gallon tank. Are there any fish types that could tolerate these lower temperatures like betas can? I also have a small pleco but he is quite peaceful and I don’t foresee him causing any problems with other fish.

What’s wrong with my beta fish?

Christine asked:

Hello,
I’ve had a male beta fish since September 2008 and kept him in a 1 gallon glass bowl with weekly water changes and a heater.
I went away for two weeks and left my parents to take care of him. I came home to a completely different fish.
They bought him a new home and it looks great- it’s a 5 gallon plastic tank, with new gravel and plastic plants. But they didn’t realise that the heater for the 1 gallon tank doesn’t heat a 5 gallon tank properly, so the water was cold. (They did however treat the water and let it sit to room temperature for 24 hours, then filtered it 24 hours before putting him in). They also had a power filter running for 3 hours a day- it has a strong current that the fish fights against and he was totally stressed out. They tell me he hasn’t been eating for the past couple of days.
I’ve stopped using the filter and bought a proper heater. But he’s still not doing well. They also used a net to transfer him.

He used to swim around a lot, come to greet me whenever I came in the room and wiggle at the glass. He’d build bubble nests and jump at his food.

He only ate one pellet tonight, usually he eats 4, and he seemed to have a hard time swimming to it. He was swimming slightly sideways and kind of somersaulted to the bottom of the tank, but I can’t see any physical problems. Now he’s just drifting listlessly at the surface, one fin out of the water, barely moving and not responding to me at all.
What can I do? I love this fish.

How high can a Rainbow Shark jump? ?

Xan asked:

I’ve had 3 jump out on me. Two of them jumped out of smaller separate bowls when I isolated them for biting one of my other fish….and brawling themselves. So that left only one more Rainbow shark in my tank. I isolated my cute fish until he healed, and then let him back into the tank. The next day he was dead from severe bites, and my Beta had a chunk taken out of his tale. So I got a tank separator and kept the shark away from everyone else. I guess the space wasn’t big enough for him…….or he wanted to get at my Beta very badly (they were always fighting over tank spaces) because he jumped right out of my 20 gallon tank…….and it was only filled halfway. I have never seen anything like that.
