Im, thinking about buying a new betta fighter fish or just a regular gold fish?

I had bought two goldfish a while back and they died lest than a week. I kept the tank clean and fed it once or twice a day. I just had a regular bowl. I was told that i needed some type of chlorophine. I dont know if this was true or not because this is the first i ever heard about this.Is this true and is there any other possible ways the fish could have died. Please help me.

I would consider the beta,because the beta does not need the pumps and the other necessary equipment to keep the tank with oxygen,they are tough little devils,but do not add any other betas with him,they fight.Or other fish.If you discide later to add or get a large tank and other fish.Keep him from the others.
